4Kilos is a Mallorcan project started in 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero and the name comes from their initial investment of 4 million pesetas.  I tasted their wines when they first started - they were really good - and they've got better & better over the years.  Their 4 Kilos is a blend of 90% Callet and 10% Mantonegro, both indigenous varieties, hand picked and then fermented 50/50 in stainless steel and large open top oak vats.  The wine is then aged for 14 months in new oak.  It has lovely aromatics - a mix of red and black fruit with herbs, sweet spice and hints of violets.  On the palate, it's fairly light but velvety and balanced with those mixed fruits to the fore along with silky tannins, fresh acidity, spice, leather, minerals and a long finish.  A bit different and just one example of the fine wines being produced in Mallorca today and highly recommended.
