A rich, powerful red from one of Italy's most famous producers, this is a hedonistic wine that is perfect for autumn and winter, pairing wonderfully with hearty stews, casseroles and game.  The grapes are picked and left to dry in controlled conditions until at least December each year to concentrate the flavours (the grapes lose 40-45% of their original weight).  They are then slowly and carefully vinified in January before transferring to oak barrels for 18 months before blending.  The finished wine is aged for another 7 months in larger oak casks then 14 months in bottle before release.  The result is big & structured but velvety, balanced and harmonious, making it delicious to drink.  Notes of dense, dark cherry, stewed plums, figs, chocolate, tobacco, leather and spice abound on the nose and palate, with fine tannins, good acidity and a sumptuous finish.  I don't drink Amarone every day but, when I do, I can't think of one I've enoyed more.
