2019 / Central Otago / New Zealand
Pinot Noir / 14% / biodynamic
Burn Cottage was started in 2002 when Marquis & Dianne Sauvage purchased an old sheep paddock in Central Otago that they thought would be better suited to a quality vineyard. Enlisting the help of Ted Lemon from Littorai, they set about transforming the site and planted their Pinot Noir vines in 2003. Adopting biodynamic principles from the beginning and minimal intervention winemaking techniques, the wines have got better and better with each passing year and are now recognised as some of the best the region can offer.
The current vintage exhibits an inviting nose of fragrant red berries, herbs and sweet spice leading you in to a palate that has more than a nod to Burgundy. There's plenty of fresh red & black fruits there along with a lovely savoury mushroomy earthiness, pepper, liquorice, subtle oak, herbs and mocha. Really fine with fresh acidity and smooth tannins, well balanced and long on the finish. Very good now but I feel it will get even better with another few years in bottle.
