2019 / Rhone / France
Syrah / 13.5% / certified biodynamic
A seventh generation vigneron, Matthieu Barret started his own domaine in the late 1990s after inheriting a parcel of vines from his grandfather. His first vintage was in 2000 and, after farming organically, he is now certified biodynamic. The grapes for the Brise Cailloux come from 45-50 year old vines, hand picked, fermented using indigenous yeasts, gently pressed and aged in concrete tanks for 14 months. It is a beautiful expression of Syrah, pure and elegant with an expressive nose of plush bramble fruits, black olive and herbs. It's silky and fresh on the palate with juicy blackberry and red cherry, bay leaf, olive and pepper - lots going on - framed within a good tannic structure and juicy acidity. Minerality as well. It's really good now but I think it will develop nicely in bottle for some years to come and I look forward to drinking another bottle soon. Top stuff.
