2019 / Ribera del Duero / Spain

Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal, Blanca del Pais / 14% / certified organic

A fairly new producer in the Ribera del Duero but certainly one to watch.  Jorge Monzon has set out his stall to make restrained, elegant, terroir expressive wines from old vineyards and, with stints working for Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and Vega Sicilia, his pedigree is without question.  Certified organic but also embracing biodynamic principles, their Reserva is a step up from the Picaro, richer and fuller but with that same elegance and silkiness.  This spends 35 months in barrel in a cool cellar before release and a mass of wonderful aromas hit you when you first take a sniff, as if they've been waiting to spring out.  Blackberry, blueberry, dark cherry, clove, vanilla, wild strawberry and leather.  Loads going on.  It's the same on the palate, layer upon layer of berry fruit, spice, chocolate, leather, liquorice and vanilla.  The tannins are very fine grained and the wine has good acidity, so masses of ageing potential, although it is so juicy, elegant and drinkable now that you may be tempted to drink them all too soon.  I'll be holding a few back in my own cellar to see how they develop.

Tim Atkin is a massive fan, awarding this vintage 96 points, and the Vivino wine community love this wine too - see here.
