Based in Chavignol, Gerard Boulay produces some of the most distinctive and sublime wines in Sancerre. A man as focused as he is paired with some of the finest vineyards in the region is a combination that means his brilliant wines are much sought after. The Clos de Beaujeau is produced from 30-60 year old vines and is an elegant, taut wine that will age brilliantly. Very pale straw in colour, the nose and palate deliver a subtle array of apple, pear, citrus, grapefruit and honey. There's a hint of creaminess from the oak ageing and a mineral edge running through the wine, as well as mouth watering acidity. It's more of a subtle style than blockbuster Sauvignon Blanc but all the better for it, a wine made to complement food rather than overpower it. Delicious now but age for 10+ years and watch it develop.
