This is an exciting new project from one of Chile's top winemakers - Marcelo Retamal (De Martino for 20 years, now head winemaker at the excellent Vinedos de Alcohuaz).  RETA is his personal, family owned project utilising grapes from the best sites he has discovered over the years.  And given the tiny production, the wines are incredibly hard to get hold of.  The Quebrada Seca comes from the oldest planted Chardonnay vineyard in the Lamari Valley and may well end up being regarded as Chile's top white wine.  The flinty, smoky nose reveals hints of citrus and spice and leads you into a wonderfully textured palate, that smoky note sitting alongside lemon, grapefruit and tropical fruits, along with a chalky minerality.  The bright acidity suggests this will develop and age wonderfully, but it drinks tremendously now with a finish that lasts forever.  Compared to the legendary Coche Dury by Luis Gutierrez of The Wine Advocate, who are we to argue!
