Chardonnay, Pinot Noir / 12.5% / sustainable
The final wine of our tasting of the excellent Sugrue South Downs line up was the top cuvee, Dr Brendan O'Regan, named after Dermot's uncle. 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, this is a multi vintage blend only produced when they feel they have a vintage that provides an exceptional base wine. In this case, that was the 2016 vintage (no Trouble With Dreams 2016 as it all went into this), disgorged with reserve wine from 2009. And whilst their other wines are excellent, you can see why this commands a premium and is considered as one of the very best in the country.
The nose is stunning - a mix of both crisp Granny Smith apple as well as sweet baked apple, citrus, elderflower and hints of passion fruit. The palate is complete and harmonious with stunning balance, really fine and complex, and both light and powerful at the same time. Hints of apple, lemon & lime, kiwi fruit, spice, biscuit and hazelnut reveal themselves slowly and there is the trademark mouth watering acidity, minerality and purity that all Sugrue wines possess. Again, the finish lasted for well over two minutes, showing the quality of the wine. Dermot's fiancee, Ana, who kindly conducted the tasting, says this can improve in bottle for a decade or more. I will certainly look forward to tasting it again and again as it evolves.
