Elio Ottin is based the the Aosta Valley in the far north of Italy, bordering Switzerland. His family have been making mountain wines for generations and Elio (alongside his son, Nick) produces modern wines with respect for the old traditions. This Syrah is grown on granitic soils which, along with the high summer temperatures and the altitude, produce wines with aromatics, elegance and tension. There's certainly a lot going on with this - bright red and black berries, minerals, smoke, floral hints, black olive, spice, a hint of white pepper, tobacco and a touch of game - a terrific balance of ripe fruit and savoury hints. It's very Northern Rhone in style, elegant with bright acidity, lovely balance and superb length of flavour. And whilst delicious now, I'll be putting a few bottles in our cellar to enjoy over the next decade. An excellent wine and, possibly because it's not a well known area, cracking value for the quality.
