Far Mountain is a relatively new project, started in 2018 by husband and wife team of Rodrigo Soto and Mai Errazuriz. Having worked for decades for leading wineries across the Americas (Quintessa, Matetic, Benziger, Paul Hobbs, Errazuriz (naturally)), they established Far Mountain with the belief that the best potential for wine in California lies in remote pockets of the Sonoma Valley mountains. With this in mind, they found some exceptional old vineyards in the Moon Mountain District AVA and their first release (2019) was internationally acclaimed. The follow up vintage, this 2020, is potentially better, displaying intense ripe black fruits with savoury and mineral character as well as spice, cedar and toast. It is incredibly silky on the palate with very refined tannins, juicy acidity and great length. It has richness of fruit but it's a more restrained Californian Cabernet with the volcanic soils and the altitude adding minerality, texture and freshness to the wine. Drinking beautifully now, I can see this developing wonderfully in bottle for a decade or two, possibly longer. And compared to other American Cabernets, it seems pretty decent value.
