This is a wine that we bought a couple of cases of en primeur to celebrate the birth of our daughter, Eden. So, for the past twelve years on her birthday, we've cracked open a bottle to enjoy and the first case has now gone. The second case was a gift to Eden and, whilst she's keeping 6 bottles, she wants us to sell the others on her behalf (she's starting university later this year so the money will come in money for her).
We did the same thing for our son, Jack, with the 2003 Leoville Barton and whilst that vintage was variable to begin with (although settled down superbly), the 2004 has been constantly excellent throughout. It may not have the depth and power of the 2003, but if you're after very fine, classic claret, then you want the 2004. It possesses a core of lovely cassis and plum fruit with cedar, tobacco and pencil shavings, showing some evolution on the palate as the tannins and acidity have softened (although it's still got plenty of time ahead of it). Wonderfully silky and balanced, harmonious and long - and at just a fraction more than current releases which you'll need to wait 20 years for - this is drinking perfectly now.
