This is a new project from Nick Farr (of By Farr fame), situated near the small town of Irrewarra, 150kms west of Melbourne. It's a relatively cool climate site with quite high rainfall, so the soils remain moist for much of the year, giving the wines a distinctive cool climate profile. Only three hectares are planted - two to Pinot Noir and one to Chardonnay - and they farm sustainably, working towards organic certification and employing some biodynamic techniques.
This is a lovely Pinot Noir, delicate and inviting with cherries, rhubarb and soft spice on the nose, leading into an elegant, silky palate with sweet and sour cherries, wild strawberry, rhubarb compote, a savoury earthiness and subtle toasty oak. A sumptuous mouthfeel, beautifully balanced with good acidity and velvety tannins. It should develop nicely in bottle and, whilst not quite at the level on the top By Farr Pinots yet, it's excellent, significantly less money and an estate worth following.
