Pax and Pam Mahle have been making world class Syrah for some years now and, as their labels suggest, they take their inspiration from the finest wines of the Northern Rhone. Their aim is for purity, structure, balance and expression of place. Their flagship Sonoma Hillsides Syrah is produced from three cool climate vineyard sites in the north of Mendocino County, where the cooling Pacific breezes give freshness and balance to the wines. Handpicked, pressed as whole clusters and fermented using natural yeasts, the wine is aged for 5 months in French oak barrels and then concrete for 6 months. The result is a classic, cool climate Syrah, packed with vibrant blackberry and dark cherry fruit, pepper, olives, liqourice and exotic spice with savoury notes on the finish. The acidity is well balanced and there is a fine tannic structure giving it the ability to age for some years (although it is delicious now). We used to drink a lot of bigger Shiraz but, as I've got older, I prefer these finer, more nuanced versions of Syrah. This is delicious.
