Jose Luis Mateo is one of the most loved and respected growers in the whole of Spain and his attention to detail in his old vineyards is legendary. He works with indigenous varieties, some nearly forgotten, and places great emphasis on matching the right variety with the right soil. He also experiments a lot with small batches and this brilliant red is the result of one such experiment. Made from Bastardo (the same variety as Trousseau from the Jura), whole bunch fermented then matured in 400 litre oak barrels, 2200 bottles were filled in 2018. Slightly austere at first, given time (decanting recommended) it opens up to reveal its true beauty. Almost Burgundian there is an array of red berries, minerals, spice and smoke with very fine tannins and lovely acidity. Not something you see in the UK very often but fans of unique, fresh, minerally reds will love this.
