Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon / 13% / sustainable
The latest vintage of a wine that's creating a real ripple in the wine world. About 25 years ago, this wine was one of the original cult wines from South Africa - known then as Cordoba Crescendo. It was the first Cabernet Franc dominated Cape red (inspired by Cheval Blanc) and, for a few years, was the must have wine for any serious wine lover. Then the winemaker moved on, the owners lost impetus and the final vintage of Cordoba Crescendo was in 2003. After that, the vineyards were still well looked after but the grapes were sold to other wineries. But now it's back, renamed as Taaibosch, and is on the way to becoming a cult wine again. And it's another stunner, rich with loads of bright brambly leafy Cabernet Franc character along with cassis, tobacco, spice and well integrated oak, but it's all beautifully balanced with real purity and poise. It has a terrific structure, decent acidity and fine tannins suggesting the wine will develop well in bottle and I was surprised by how harmonious it is already. It appears full on but it has such elegance and an underlying silkiness that makes you want to go back in for another sip, then another - revealing more subtle nuances each time you do. Cracking stuff and well worth getting a few for your cellar.
