Henschke are one of Australia’s premier producers, with their iconic Hill of Grace sitting alongside Penfolds Grange as arguably Australia’s top two wines (with lofty prices to match – the latest Hill of Grace is £500+ per bottle).  Henschke also produce Mount Edelstone Shiraz (£130) and Cyril Henschke Cabernet (£102) and both are exceptional wines.  But the one for me that has always stood out as a relative bargain in their line-up is the Keyneton Euphonium, so I thought I’d re visit and see whether it is as good as the last time I drunk it.  The answer is – it’s better!

This is a blend of 57% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc from some of their best vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys.  The nose is sublime, packed with plum, blackberry, liquorice and hints of pepper from the Shiraz, alongside sweet cassis, tobacco, spice and a subtle herbal character.  The sort of nose that makes you want to dive straight in.  The palate is full, as one would expect, but perfectly balanced with layer upon layer of blackberry, blackcurrant, damson, raspberry, tobacco leaf and clove.  There’s ripe Barossa fruit but this is restrained and balanced with a freshness and finesse which you often find with cooler Eden Valley wines.  This makes for a moreish wine.  It is harmonious, complex and delicious with velvety tannins and good acidity meaning it will mature wonderfully in your cellar for 15 years plus, although it can be enjoyed right now (we decanted for two hours).  The length of finish, something I think makes the top wines stand out, goes on and on like an old fish wife.
