As with the Chanin Chardonnay, we tasted this Pinot Noir against a number of Californian Pinots (mainly top end wines from the Sonoma Coast). And Chanin was again the winner! This is from one of Santa Barbara's best known vineyards, planted in 1971, and this is a silky smooth stunner with beautiful notes of cherry, raspberry and strawberry along with some black fruit hints. Plush and velvety, the bright fruit is balanced with subtle savoury hints, soft spice, fine tannins and juicy acidity. It's lovely, clearly New World but with Old World elegance and complexity. It's drinking wonderfully now but I've tasted older vintages and Chanin's wines develop really well. A stunner.
