2019 / Douro / Portugal
Touriga Nacional / 14% / sustainable
Produced by brother and sister, Joana and Antonio Macanita, two of Portugal's superstar winemakers, their aim with these wines is to use old vines from some of the Douro's best vineyards, tend them well, handle them gently, and let the vines express their true terroir. The right sites in the Douro have the potential to produce world class wines and the Macanita project aims to do exactly that. What we love about their wines is that whilst the pure fruit really delivers, this is balanced by a lifted freshness, minerality and complexity that only top wines deliver. This Touriga Nacional is from the premium Cima Corgo region, and it entices you with its gorgeous nose of blueberry, blackberry, cherry and raspberry, along with cloves and some floral hints. The palate is juicy and silky, fresh and perfectly poised. There is lots going on here - cherry, blackberry, raspberry, sweet spice, mocha, fine oak, herbs and minerals. It has lifted aromatics to balance the depth of flavour and is persistent on the finish. Really impressive and, whilst great now, I'm sticking a few away in my cellar to enjoy over the next decade. And, given the exceptional quality of this, it's a relative bargain. Fill your boots!
