I was lucky enough to visit Grosset some years ago and both Jeff and his wife, Stephanie Toole (who makes the excellent Mount Horrocks wines) were so welcoming and engaging that it made me love their wines even more than I had done up to that point. They were incredibly generous too, opening up their own personal cellar during dinner and sharing old vintages of their wines alongside other Australian legends, such as Wendouree. A truly memorable evening spent with a passionate couple who both produce world class wines. Jeff is best known for producing stunning ageworthy dry Rieslings - he's spent a lot of time analysing his vineyards and picking the most suitable plots for each wine. And whilst his top Riesling, Polish Hill, is a stunner, we drink more of the Springvale, which is more approachable earlier in its life. This, as always when young, is a little tight right now but give it some air and you'll note lime, lemongrass, ginger and hints of blossom. The high acidity and minerality are to the fore initially on the palate, then the lemon and lime fruits start to show through along with grapefruit and a bit of green apple. Yes, it's crisp with decent weight and concentration and a long, mouth watering finish. Pair now with Asian cuisine or tuck away a few in your cellar and enjoy over the next 10-15 years.
