2018 / Ribera del Duero / Spain

Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot / 14.5% / organic

One of the finest wines I've drunk over the past 12 months, a few bottles of this have gone straight into my own cellar.  I know that means less available for our customers, but it's so darn good I just couldn't resist!  From a brilliant producer (and with some very fine wines in the group as a whole), the stunning nose reveals strawberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, subtle toasty oak, sweet spice and cigar smoke.  It suggests it's going to be sensational and, on the palate, it confirms this.  As silky as George Best in his pomp, it is so perfectly balanced and poised that you wish you could drink this sort of thing every day.  There's plenty of fresh berry fruit - red and black - but it's so soft and velvety that it slips down your throat before you've had a chance to really appreciate it.  The next sip reveals a lovely underlying structure - good acidity, very fine tannins, complexity, minerality and length.  Then there are notes of nutmeg, toast, tobacco, cocoa and more.  Reds from the Ribera del Duero can sometimes get a bit too big.  This hits exactly the right spot and is a stunner!
