We keep finding these top end Spanish reds that are so remarkably good that we just have to add them to the list. Cuentavinas was started by winemaker Eduardo Eguren (from a family of very esteemed winemakers) when he was left some old vineyards by his grandfather. And his aim is to embrace the ancient vines and showcase the terroir. This Rioja is predominantly Tempranillo (80%) co-fermented with the white varieties Viura and Malvasia - much like they do in the Northern Rhone. The white grapes add elegance, aromatics and freshness and so you get a sort of Rioja meets Rhone meets Burgundy kind of winemaking. The wine is exceptionally silky and smooth with vibrant red and black fruits on the nose and palate, along with notes of pepper, spice, tobacco and minerals. Very fine tannins, bright acidity, balanced and long. It's youthful but the elements are all there for this to evolve wonderfully in bottle (it is delicious now but it will improve further). A producer to watch.
