David Powell is the man that founded the iconic Torbreck winery in 1994, gaining a cult following for his stunning wines before going into receivership in 2002 (he stayed on as winemaker for the new owner), buying the business back with a partner in 2008, then being kicked out by said partner in 2013.  I've had the privilege of tasting with Dave a couple of times and, as well as being a top winemaker and great company, I don't think I'll ever meet another winemaker that swears quite as much.  In fact, I'm not sure I'll meet another human that swears as much.  Apart from Danny effin Dyer, he might get close.

Anyway, Dave has started a new venture with his son, Callum.  It's not dissimilar to Torbreck in that they're inspired by the top wines from the Rhone; they source their fruit from the best vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys; and they believe that great wines come from great vineyards.  And once you've got top quality fruit, you shouldn't need to mess around with it too much, so they've adopted a minimalist approach to winemaking.  And the results are wines such as this absolute stunner.  Inky dark in colour, there's a full on nose of ripe dark fruit, sweet oak and exotic spices.  It's smells like a big, hedonistic wine and it is, although the palate is so well balanced that it comes across as slightly more restrained than the nose would have you believe.  It is really, really velvety and delicious with various layers revealing themselves in the glass - blackberry, damson, plum, black cherry, pepper, nutmeg, clove, dark chocolate, bay leaf, black olive, warm spice, vanilla - I could keep going on as there's so many little nuances.  The tannins are ripe and juicy, the acidity is well balanced and the finish still lingers after 2 minutes.  It's a blockbuster Aussie Shiraz but it is so harmonious and balanced that the bottle disappeared a bit too quickly for such a stunning wine.  On track to be one of Australia's new icons, grab a few bottles before the price goes crazy.
