Wow, wow, wow. I've enjoyed various Shafer wines over the years, but they seem to be getting better and better. You always know a good wine as it's the first bottle emptied when you open a few bottles to taste with friends. And that was the case with this at a recent dinner. The nose is stunning with dark cassis and bramble fruits, sweet coconut oak and spice, ripe and alluring. It's so silky and harmonious on the palate that it is a real treat to take a sip, allowing the cassis, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruit to slosh around your mouth, balanced with fresh acidity, velvety tannins and well integrated oak (that's less obvious on the palate than the nose). It has a beautiful structure, everything is singing from the same song sheet, and there's additional notes of tobacco, chocolate, mocha and clove. Long and balanced, it's exceptional. Decant first if drinking now but will evolve and improve in bottle for well over a decade.
