2018 / Beaujolais / France
Gamay / 13% / organic
From a small grower who follows the same principles as Beaujolais legends Marcel Lapierre and Jean Foillard, this is from certified organic vineyards and made with minimal intervention. It reminds me of a visit to France about 20 years ago for a wedding when we were invited to the bride's uncle's house the day before the big day and he pulled out multiple bottles of old Beaujolais, all of which were stunning. I can see this being a bottle that I open in a decade and it being amazing, although it's pretty good now. You get fresh raspberry, black cherry, cranberry and cola on the nose - different and funky - then a savoury, earthy hit on the palate before the bright cherry and damson fruit comes through. There's a little bit of spritz (fizz) on the tongue but it's meant to be there so don't worry and the wine is really pure with good minerality. There's also a little bit of sappy grip and black pepper & spice on the finish. Characterful, balanced and long, with a refreshingly low 13% alcohol, I'm really looking forward to opening a bottle every couple of years to see how this evolves. I'll be raising a glass to the uncle each time I do.
