Garnacha / 14.5% / certified biodynamic

I was taken aback by Finca l'Argata as I'm not usually a fan of straight Garnacha but this is an interesting producer that is now seventh generation of the Anguera family.  Over the past ten years, Joan and Josep have worked tirelessly to transform the vineyards and they are now certified biodynamic.  The results are that the fruit now has a beautiful purity and intensity and, as the old going says, you can only make good wine if you've got good fruit.  You've still got to handle this fruit properly in the winery though, so they've moved to low intervention, whole cluster ferments, natural yeasts, old oak and a dramatic reduction in sulphur use, simply letting the top quality fruit shine through.

And the finished product is superb, understated yet smooth and delicious with bright juicy red fruit, not over ripe, with a touch of earthiness, garrigue and grip.  Well balanced and harmonious, and certainly doesn't feel like the 14.5% alcohol that the label says.  Pure and long, this is biodynamic wine at its finest.
