Pinot Noir / 13.5% / biodynamic
Lady of the Sunshine, Gina Hildebrand, grew up surrounded by biodynamics as it is what was practised on her parents farm in the Sierra Foothills. After working several harvests in France, New Zealand, Oregon and Napa, Gina is now based in Central Coast where she farms 2.5 hectares of vineyards, farming organically and following biodynamic principles. Her approach to winemaking is similar to that of her husband (Mikey from Scar of the Sea) - minimal intervention, wild yeasts, minimal SO2, neutral French oak for fermentation and ageing - looking to make wines with purity and expression of the terroir and variety.
Chene is Gina's home vineyard and certified biodynamic from the 2020 vintage. It's a cool climate vineyard densely planted with four different Pinot clones - this wine being a 50/50 split of Clone 115 and 667, planted at the steepest slope of the vineyard. Hand picked and fermented using native yeast and 70% whole cluster. Punched down lightly for gentle extraction then pressed with a basket press and finished in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. It's a really aromatic wine with lovely perfumed notes of red cherries, violets and sweet spice. On the palate, it is silky with bright notes of wild strawberry, cherry, cranberry and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of black pepper, clove, violets and earthy minerality. Really fine and pure with more than a nod to Burgundy, it's a stunner.
The wine community at Vivino love it - see here.
