We've been personal collectors of John's wines since he started on his own - in fact, we've got seven different vintages in our cellar at home. The Eligo Shiraz is his reserve wine, only made in the best vintages. It's a wine that needs time before it reveals its true excellence, so better to cellar it and be patient (drink his beautiful Entity Shiraz while you wait). The 2017 vintage, rated as one of his best, is opaque in colour with a wonderful nose of blackberry, blueberry, damson, liquorice and Christmas cake spice. The palate is concentrated yet perfectly balanced with multiple layers of dark berry fruit, liquorice, tobacco, mocha, nutmeg and fine grained toasted oak. There's also a savoury character to the wine, balancing the sweet fruit, as well as good acidity and a lingering finish. It develops wonderfully in bottle, as you'd expect from a man that used to make Penfolds Grange. Highly recommended.
