It's great to be blown away by something new but that's exactly what happened when we tasted this for the first time. Made by Guillaume Nell, one of SA's exciting new generation of winemakers, this is the second vintage of their Verdelho (customers went nuts for the first vintage when the word spread) and, given that production is 1568 bottles, you can understand why it doesn't last long when released. An inviting nose of baked apple strudel, honey, citrus and peach leads into a stunning waxy, textural palate. The fruit is balanced with a creamy note (from lees ageing), good acidity and almost a tannic like bit of grip, unusual in a white but it adds to the experience. It's long, delicious, complex, different and hard to find, so ticks all our boxes. If you like white Rhone or Chardonnay, or great wine in general, grab yourself a bottle or two before it goes.
