I was lucky enough to visit Grosset some years ago and both Jeff and his wife, Stephanie Toole (who makes the excellent Mount Horrocks wines) were so welcoming and engaging that it made me love their wines even more than I had done up to that point. They were incredibly generous too, opening up their own personal cellar during dinner and sharing old vintages of their wines alongside other Australian legends, such as Wendouree. A truly memorable evening spent with a passionate couple who both produce world class wines. Jeff may be better known for his Rieslings, but his Gaia - a 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc blend - has always been sensational. And something that gets better with bottle age. This vintage has all the brambly black fruit and dark cherry expected, with tobacco and spice, then it explodes on the palate with fresh, sweet berry fruit, leafy tobacco, eucalyptus, coffee bean and bay leaf. The tannins are present but fine grained, it has good acidity and a firm structure, as well as a long, persistent finish. It's all there to be enjoyed now but does age gracefully for 10-15 years, often more. It's a stunner and highly recommended.
