Produced from 100 year old vines in Vistalba, Mai is Kaiken's top red and an absolute stunner. It's structured, powerful and complex yet rounded, silky and balanced at the same time, an iron fist in a velvet glove. Decant first for an hour or two and you find an array of aromas when you put your nose in the glass - ripe blackberry, plum and blueberry fruit with toasty oak, spice and tobacco. Certainly very inviting. Plush in the mouth with different layers of dark berry and cherry fruit along with chocolate, tobacco, five spice and mocha. The tannins are slightly chewy at this stage but that's not a bad thing and the acidity is good. The finish lasts an age and reinforces the fact that this is an exceptionally good wine. Drinking well now but with the structure to improve in bottle over the next decade.
