Sometimes a wine just stops you in your tracks (tasting d'Yquem en primeur always seems to do that to me), and this wine from Donnafugata has done just that each time I've drunk it. Produced from Zibibbo grapes planted in Pantelleria, South West Sicily, Donnafugata produce a still wine from some of the grapes, then add the passito grapes (dried on mats) to the must in several batches. So you get the best of both worlds - freshness, vibrancy and minerality, along with great depth of flavour, intensity and complexity. It really is a remarkable wine, packed with apricot, peach, citrus, candied citrus zest, caramel, Mediterranean herbs, flowers and spice.
