We've been on the lookout for a good Arneis for a while so when we heard that this is the wine that top Barolo winemakers often drink when they get together at the local restaurant, we thought we ought to see why. And the simple answer is because it's bloody good! It's from a small family owned estate based in the Roero hills north of Alba. In the higher acidity, sandy soils here they get great aromatics in their Arneis, which is apparent when you first take a sniff - fresh stone fruit, apple, lemon, lime and crushed stones coming through. It is fresh and zippy on the palate, really vibrant, with citrus, peach, mineral and almond notes to the fore and subtle hints of chicory and herbs in the background. Well balanced with a clean finish, Arneis is mostly drunk young but I have to say I've enjoyed some with a few years bottle age and they are incredible. So, enjoy now but save a bottle or two for the future.
